Raised by an entrepreneur and salesman, the sales profession runs deep in Tom Zimmerman’s DNA. In his early teens his Father brought him in to the family’s business where he learned how to identify value and service his customers’ needs. He attended Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Selling and Sales Management, with a minor in Organizational Leadership and Supervision.
Upon graduating from Purdue, Zimmerman was recruited by The Trex Company to join their Sales Associate Program. During the program, he learned about the LBM market, distribution channel, and pull-through selling. He finished the Sales Associate Program with a top ranking and was immediately promoted to Sales Representative covering the Mid-Atlantic Territory.
In 2005, Zimmerman was recruited and hired by the President of AZEK Building Products to help support the growth of AZEK’s Mid-Atlantic market. Within his first year, he earned AZEK’s coveted “Brand Momentum Award.” He was then promoted to the role of District Sales Manager for the Southeast and relocated to Atlanta, GA. He helped introduce and launch AZEK Deck & Rail in the Southeast markets and served as the company’s representative for multiple national accounts.
Zimmerman was then recruited by Boral to lead the sales and marketing efforts for a greenfield business unit. As Director of Sales and Marketing, he was instrumental in creating and executing the go-to-market strategy for a new category of building material for the exterior trim and siding space. Boral’s new business that started as a pilot program rapidly grew into a multi-level sales and marketing team of over 50 salespeople, and Zimmerman was promoted to Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The business had grown to include nationwide distribution and a dealer network that exceeded 1,000 stocking dealer, with multiple product launches, associated brands, and top product awards. In 2017 he was promoted to Vice President of Sales for Boral’s Building Products division where he helped lead the commercial strategy and sales execution for 12 Brands across multiple markets, sales channels, and product life cycles.
In 2018, Zimmerman was recruited to be Vice President of Sales for GranQuartz, the nation’s largest distributor of tools and equipment for the stone countertop and concrete fabrication industries. He immediately assessed and identified opportunities and challenges for the sales organization, including strategic focus, organizational alignment, training and personnel development. His efforts increased the effectiveness of the sales team through the implementation of sales dashboards, planning tools, and a comprehensive training program.
In late 2019 Zimmerman founded SHIFT Sales Training & Consulting to help clients and salespeople harness their potential and take their performance to the next gear through an effective, efficient, and organized model of creating mutual value for themselves and customers.
Zimmerman is a student of the sales profession and lives in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, is married with three children, and enjoys coaching baseball and spending time with his family.
